Only 3% of households in Badakhshan, Northern Afghanistan have electricity. In May last year the German development agency GIZ and engineering company Integration jointly won an Ashden Award for electrifying rural communities in North East Afghanistan through hydropower. 

The 2013 Ashden Awards are on 20 June.

LED chandeliers anyone?
The National Trust won an Ashden UK Gold Award in 2012 for its impressive energy saving work across its Welsh properties, demonstrating that even the most sensitive buildings can be made much more energy efficient. This is LED lighting being installed at Plas Newydd. You can find out more and watch a film of the award-winning work here.
